Melvins + Koenjihyakkei (高円寺百景) @ FIMAV 2007

Finally, the 2007 edition of the FIMAV is launched. I came back at 4:00 am this morning from Victoriaville and going back for more tonight.

I saw two shows; Melvins and Koenjihyakkei (高円寺百景). The Melvins were all right, but they didn't really do it for me. It was more a nostalgic moment for me, it reminded me some parties back when I was in Australia. They began and finished the show with was an excruciatingly long soundtrack (no musicians on the stage). They played as tough they were in a bubble, not once they tried to make contact with the crowd in from of them. The public seemed to like the show, there was a small mosh pit and I even saw a guy doing some body surfing once.

I was completely blown away by Keonjihyakkei (高円寺百景) ! I didn't knew them at all, what a great find. I don't know how to describe their sound; furious, melodic, precise, jazzy, proggy, funny, profound, aerial... It was a shock and awe moment for me, probably one of the best show I saw (and I saw a lot). They where very generous with the public; Kengo Sakamoto (bass) and Tatsuya Yoshida (drums) made a point to present their songs even if they had a very limited english. Being a true Japanese, Yamamoto Kyoko (voice) photographed the crowd and also the band in front of the crowd :-). It was the first time they played outside of Japan and I'm sure Victoriaville will leave them a very good impression. Here's a link of a video of them playing in the studio of WFMU.

Pride Tiger + Lesbo Vrouven + Les Georges Leningrad

At first, I was surprised to learn that the show would be presented at the Dagobert, I was kind of expecting to see it at Rouje... The sound and light kit of the Dag is amazing, so no complaints here.

Like true groupies, we arrived way too early, the ticket was stating 9 pm (yeah, right). I did'nt knew Pride Tiger and I was pleasantly surprised. It reminded me of some kind of cock rock with a touch of Iron Maiden. The singer/drummer was a pure concentrate of energy (borderline puppy joy).

I'm glad I finally got to see the Lesbo Vrouven, I missed their previous shows. They offered a kick-ass performance. I particularly liked the bass, it had a NoMeansNo feel to it. The singer/guitarist is a show beast, very entertaining. While buying their album, I learned from the singer that they have something coming up in the future with Les Goules...

Les Georges Leningrad where plenty decadent as always. I would love to see them play in front of a Christian convention. The marvelous plywood bat was there at the back, the sexy echo queen singer was on fire. The ninja/burglar costume of the keyboardist was too good, all I could see was his eyes from where I was sitting. If you never saw those guys in concert, you are really missing something.

Barely 4 hours of sleep is definitely not enough for my poor brain...

Howe Gelb Sno' Angel + Jim Bryson @ La Sala Rossa

Photo: Christian Morin

The night could have been tragic. Just before leaving Quebec City, we where witness to a car accident. A car in front of us crashed hard on the side of an other car, fortunately no one was hurt. It could have been us...

I went in Montreal to see a great show at the La Sala Rossa (what a nice venue). I knew nothing of Howe Gelb, and I was completely blown away. He reminded me of Tom Waits sometimes. I was sitting front row and at one point I had to hold Howe Gelb's guitar while he was playing on the piano downstage next to me. The stage was crowded, there was a wonderful and energic gospel choir with the band (Voices of Praise, from Ottawa). The first part of the show was very nice too, it was Jim Bryson and his band (he was also playing guitar for Howe Gelb).

The trip back to Quebec City was eerie, a lot of fog was floating around the deserted highway 20.

Difficult choice: Holy Fuck or Duchess Says + Les Georges Leningrad UPDATED

It's not fair ! On September 20th, there's two excellent shows I want to see. It's impossible for me to choose which one to attend... Duchess Says and Les Georges Leningrad at Rouje (More info) or Holy Fuck at the Grand Salon (More info)

***Edit***

Good news (!?!), the show is cancelled. I can now go see Holy Fuck knowing I don't miss a good show. According to Rouje, the show was cancelled a month ago by the producer. Newspapers made a mistake and published anyway. I did'nt check before posting... sorry about that.

Faubourg en Fleurs

I went down St-Jean Baptiste street today and it was the Faubourg en Fleurs event. It's a tradition in the neighborhood every year. The street is closed and all the shop have outside displays. The bars put their tables in the middle of the street, you can buy hot dogs and shish taouk sandwiches from some restaurants. Bands are playing along in the street (The Void where playing some Metallica, Iron Maiden and AC/DC). I love where I live !

Tonight's Subhumans show

I've finally seen Subhumans at l'Anti tonight. What a great show ! Amazing ! Those guys are solid, and they can teach a lesson to many bands. It was a concentrate of pure energy. I wish they could've gone for longer, but I can imagine they were pretty exhausted from such a performance. The show went so fast, it was like a flash. It was good seeing that big crowd of punks outside, scatering around côte d'Abraham, still stunned by the show. Here's a video of the song "I Don't wanna die" I've found on YouTube that was recorded August 6, 1998.

Soirées Québec 84

I'm not into 80's music, but a dear friend is holding an event at Gallerie Rouje next friday (Jan. 27th at 21h00, 4$). The event is Québec 84, a night filled with rock, pop, alternative and francophone music from the 80's. Dj Lo and Dj Zézette are the hosts for the night. Dress very lightly, the Galerie Rouje feels like being in an oven with all those crazy peoples dancing.
